When I was growing and developing as a young saxophonist, transcription books like this helped me understand the vocabulary and sensibility of many great saxophonists. I listened to their records, played along with them and tried to sound exactly like them. After many years of studying their solos, records, and compositions, elements of the vocabulary, phrasing, and sound of these great players became a huge part of who I am. In fact, all of their musical personalities come out of me at some time or another. As I grew, however, the more I began to develop my own sound, my own sensibility, and compositional style that is uniquely my own but greatly influenced by those I studied closely. Getting the sound of great players in your ear and under your fingers is, in my opinion, essential to the development of young musicians.
